Eastern Croatia is fortunate to have an regional association of museums that strategically supports their development and provides network of solidarity among their members.
The Association of Museums of Eastern Croatia has invited several lectures as the introduction at their annual assembly of around 120 attendees, held 22 November 2019 in Slavonski Brod.
Building on their recent experiences with floods, and in consideration of other current and upcoming risks to their heritage collections, the Association used the event to advance the disaster risk preparedness and resilience of their member museums.
Before proceeding with the annual reports and elections of new management for the next 4-year mandate, the organizers invited several introductory presentations.
The first one was given by Tamara Štefanac from the National and University Library in Zagreb on importance of heritage documentation. It touched upon the role of documentation in prevention, response and recovery as part of the heritage protection systems.
The second presentation was given by Saša Tkalec from the Cultural Innovation Center on disaster risk management aspects for heritage institutions. It gave a comprehensive overview of responsibilities, protocols and capacities of prevention and protection systems for heritage in crisis.
The third presentation featured the museum app designed to facilitate museum experience for visitors. While the fourth one was a presentation of the new issue of Association’s professional museological magazine “Glasnik”.
The final presentation was given by Janja Juzbašić, director of the Regional Museum Stjepan Gruber, and her colleague. This Regional Museum had direct experiences with the floods, and based on their experiences suggested the first two presentations, to advance the readiness and resilience of museums to various risks.
The presentations provoked a discussion during the session and in the breaks, especially in the light of the region’s experience with frequent floods.
As as break from the formal programme, the students of the Musical School Slavonski Brod provided a wonderful concert.
Networking highlight of the event was a marvelous lunch and far-known Slavonian hospitality. The joint lunch was an opportunity to express gratitude to the earlier Association’s management chaired by Ms. Ruža Marić, as well as to discuss current issues and opportunities.
Museum of Brodsko Posavlje has warmly welcomed the attendees into their facilities and presented their the current exhibitions. The Museum of Brodsko Posavlje was particularly well chosen for the host of the annual assembly, as this year it celebrates its first marvelous 85 years since establishment. Congratulations!
The event was a great professional opportunity for museums and their staff to consider how to advance their protection and presentation of heritage in regular and crisis conditions.
On the margins of the event, it has been announced that the Association intends to son create a crisis management team to deal with the regional current and upcoming risks that affect their member museums.
